Diving on Citalopram
Hi i am a very keen diver although my job dosent alow me to go very often and i have recently been given some Citalopram as a result of being stressed through work. i am due to go on a hoiliday to the Bahamas as my friend is an instructor out there and obviously i want to dive. Is it safe to do so whilst on this medication?
Thank you and lok forward to a response. :)))
This is an area completely free of any objective data. There is no reason to suppose that citalopram would pose any risk to you while diving but no evidence indicate it is safe either. If the stressors are specifically work related, its entirely possible you wouldn't need it while on vacation anyway. Its probably worth discussing this approach with your GP and if you both conclude its non-essential during your trip stopping it a week or so before you depart might be a solutoion to your problem The t1/2 of citalopram is about 35 hours so would be effectively out of your system in 6 days. However, some people do develop mild anxiety on withdrawal of citalopram (and most other SSRIs) and itf that occurred, and was problematic, it would give you time to re-start the drug prior to your departure.
