The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society was founded in the early 1970's.
The aims and objectives of the society are:

 | To promote and facilitate information and research on all aspects of underwater and hyperbaric medicine. | | To provide information on underwater medicine to all interested groups. This includes diving organisations, industry, the military, as well as, the individual diver. | | To promote exchange of information between members on all aspects of underwater medicine and related subjects and to publish a quarterly Journal. | | To convene members annually at a Scientific Conference. |
